Quiet Tuesday

Not much to comment on today. If you want a very good run down on the state of sportscar racing in the US following the Miller ALMS race then log on to www.lastturnclub.com.

Rossi says he will not win at Laguna Seca this weekend, he is saving that for a later race, so Lorenzo and the rest of the boys need to make hay etc. It will be interesting to see how Roger Hayden goes on a track he will know better than most and on a bike that has shown good form this year with de Puniet.

Red Bull are still at it. You must be getting tired of me writing about them , but they cannot help themselves. A week and a half later, and now the "engineer" come out and says Mark did not like that wing anyway.

On the home front the house is starting to look sorted, just need to recycle the paper and boxes now so we can walk around. Yesterday's meeting turned out to be defined by when people thought "tomorrow" was, so it is today. I'll update you tomorrow, that would be Wednesday, on the project.

Air Travel

Air travel, who needs it! It is supposed to be fast and convenient when in truth it is neither. A good friend back in Australia who was a pilot told me "if you want to be sure of getting somewhere do not fly." And that was in the late seventies, how bad is it now. Missed the blog yesterday while flying from Phoenix to New Orleans on Delta, via Atlanta of course, and taking twelve hours with only four of that actually flying! I would not mind that they have delays and problems with aircraft if they actually told you the truth and not the continual lies.  Only one very nice lady actually told me the truth. They must all go to school to learn how to lie to customers, yes customers, something the airlines have forgotten about, and to threaten them with not flying at all if they dare to complain. Try and find a complaints button on their web site.

So, here I am back in Louisiana finishing packing and getting set to drive back to Phoenix. We have a hanger to set up at Falcon Field, a municipal airport in Mesa, where we are going to promote the new track. Put in some toys to compliment the helicopters, planes, and power boat already there, and set up a projector and some couches and we are ready for our first group in two weeks. As I said, the project is evolving and we are now planning to place"casitas," garages with living space above, along pit lane so it looks like a European track. Getting nicer every day.

Big day today which I will try and watch between packing. World Cup final, British GP, ALMS Miller, and Tour de France. Hope you all enjoy, back Monday!

Ascari

Showed my partners the Ascari club in Spain, which is one of the few outside the US. Certainly sets the standard we are looking for, even though the track is a bit odd in places. Facilities are great so check it out, this is what we are looking to build here in Arizona, without the nice scenery of course.

Off to look at a building to use as a base and display area till we get on site, somewhere to bring prospective members with a few "toys" around.

ART have announced they are not pursuing the last F1 team slot for 2011. This is Jean Todt's son's team, and was thought a front runner for the place. Can't raise the cash it seems, and as a very successful team in the lower categories that must tell a tale. Time is getting late for the FIA to make a decision if we are not going to see a repeat of this years scramble to be ready by a new team.

The mysterious US group, Cypher, that is supposedly putting an F1 team together and has a bid in, has kept very quiet of late. Not that this is a bad thing, we saw way too much horn blowing from Mr Windsor last year, but it would be nice to know something. They are apparently talking to  a young American driver, which would be good, just not sure he is the right one.

Kubica has resigned for Renault for the next couple of years, no surprise there, and as I predicted, the drivers market will be very quiet this year.

Late!

Hi everyone and sorry for being late, but it's been a busy day. Started with a trip to the County seat and a meeting to go over the project with County Staff as a first run through. No red flags, some good info and all we need to start the rezoning. That will take a few months, but in the meantime we can be promoting the memberships and getting our plans finalized and contractors sorted.

Followed that with a meeting of the partners to go over our program for the next few weeks to finalize the name and logo, web site and promotional material. Oh yes, and move my furniture to Arizona. Xan is busy organizing that so that when the movers come we are ready. Interesting times.

Had a contact from Serbia about the FIA guidelines for a track. It is so hard for someone who has no background in this and the country has no history to even know how to start, had to feel sorry for him. Hopefully gave him some places to go and learn. Poor guy has been given this task because the client cannot afford to hire someone like me. How do they think they are going to afford to build the track if they cannot afford my fee? Like I said with Palestine, this sport just keeps on growing. I'm probably crazy, but I'll likely lay him out a track, my good deed for the year. What can I say, I love the sport.

Still not a lot of news to comment on. We have ALMS at Miller this weekend, not that you'd know it. British F1 GP which should be a great race. Lots of teams and drivers really wanting to win here, and it will be interesting to see what the new section does for the racing. World Cup Final, Holland already there, but sorry to my Dutch friends, I fancy Spain or Germany will beat them. Tour de France continues on its crazy way, the first week never usually this fraught. A lot of sore bike riders out there, and some just out.

Bernie says he is still trying for a race in New Jersey, overlooking Manhattan. When asked about what would happen if Austin did not come through he said that there were penalty clauses, but that he remains confident that this will not happen and says that the government "won't lose their money". However, he does sound one note of caution: "It's hard to promote anything in America. It will either get a following or it won't." Never a truer word spoken, after all he has been trying for thirty years. Long Beach, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix, Indianapolis and now Austin?

Beer Anyone?

How did you like the beer bottle on the track at Valencia? Promoter said he did not think anyone threw it or it would have broken, now there's a nice image! So it rolled out there through the wall? Or was one of the marshals drinking it? "It could happen anywhere" he said. Well I have been watching GP's a long time and I've never seen it. When I have run races I made sure there were no bottles on the site and most times try and stop cans. Sell sodas and beer in cups, harder for the people to get drunk that way anyway, and stops the potential for some idiot to throw it. I annoyed the beverage sellers of course, but Oh Well, that 's just me. It seems they are more concerned about the track not providing much in the way of overtaking, as they should be. It will be interesting to see what their proposed solutions are.

The fallout from the weekends race continues, with the Spanish press beating up the story about Alonso's and Hamilton's comments. They really do not like Lewis do they? Lewis should not be beating their favorite son. I lived there for a year and never felt that there was a racist element, but after what happened at Barcelona a couple of years ago, and the continuing jibes from the press you have to wonder. Ferrari should look at the Rosberg incident at Singapore the first year where of my memory is correct he crossed the blend line on the pit out and had to do a drive through, but like Lewis he had a few laps to build up a cushion and did it without losing a place and finished well up.

FOTA is working with an environmental audit group called Trucost to reduce the carbon footprint in F1. No surprise to me but the actual racing is a very small component and while they are looking at more efficient engines for 2013, the main thrust is in how they work as a whole. The target that they have at the moment is 12% reduction by 2012. Maybe that will keep the greenies happy, but I doubt it. The nice thing was that, as I have been saying, Trucost acknowledged that racing is already about efficiency and the teams are already doing well.

Interesting that Melbourne F1 GP has announced a bigger presence for the V8Supercars at next years GP, with three races totaling 500K. Maybe they have just worked out that Adelaide is pulling a bigger crowd for the V8's than they are getting for the GP?

Talking of Australia, it seems my mate Wayne Gardner has spoken up about the state of GP racing and current riders. http://www.waynegardnerapproved.com.au./wr14.htm. Stirred up some comments, like he should keep quiet he's too old to know! I for one totally agree as you will know from reading this blog. When Wayne speaks people should listen.

Phil Hall has also been conversing with me about new tracks being built in the US, and "rich men's playgrounds." It is an unfortunate fact of life that the spectator event driven business model for tracks no longer works. The sanctioning fees and cost of staging races is higher than the potential spectator draw for those events. The model that does work is to build a facility for members, yes rich guys, who want to drive fast and not necessarily race, and can pay for the privilege. Now, once you have the facility, then you can look to accommodate clubs to come and race, renting the track and enjoying the nice facilities a country club offers. Some tracks here like New Jersey or Virginia Raceway also stage spectator events, but that is not what is driving them, if you excuse the pun. At the moment it is a US phenomenon, but there are a couple in Spain, and it will spread. The only two spectator tracks built here recently are Miller Park and Barber Motorsports park, both built by rich guys, who then put their name on it, what does that tell you. Other than that you need a Government to pay for it, shades of Eastern Creek.

That is why we are building a Country Club here in Arizona. Had a great meeting last evening with the local Corvette Owners Club and everything we do confirms that the location and the type of facility are correct, and the demand is there.

To finish off today, why is it that there is so little news on a daily basis other than for F1? Where are the series promoters? How can you expect the public to know when events are happening if you only promote the week before, and lose interest between events, especially for a series like ALMS that has not had a race for two months! When will they learn that you have to work at this 365 days a year, put out stories and information. I know I harp on Adelaide and PI, but they were great models of how to do this stuff, not just because of my involvement but because of the other great staff. Terry Plane at the Adelaide event had a story in the daily paper every day for a year. Did not appreciate him at the time but what he did was amazing.

1. I would go and meet them and look to charge $15k plus expenses. Money up front.

2. For my part of the conceptual layout my guess is $10k for me. I would draw the layout for you guys to put into the concept master plan.We can talk through the master plan probably without me coming over there.

3. Detailed design I would charge $15k and again provide you with a dimensioned hand drawn plan to input.

4. I would probably need to come to you and work on the dossier together, say $10k for me.
