Sorry to start on a slow news day. The only significant thing I read is that Mansell and Villeneuve have both come out and advised Lewis Hamilton not to jump ship. This after a Daily Mail article yesterday said Lewis had an escape clause in his contract if McLaren did not win the drivers and constructors championship, neither of which look likely. As they both have experience of leaving a winning team and careers that took a nosedive after, although Mansell's time at Ferrari wasn't all bad, they are telling Lewis to stick with the team who have groomed and supported him and still do. Hard to do when you are getting beat, but probably good advice in the long term.
Let's look forward to Silverstone this weekend and the non-blown exhaust cars, and see where that all falls out. I have an answer to my question on whether we have had two Australians in one F1 race before, and my great buddy Bill Crouch has done the research and we have. Alan Jones and Vern Schuppan in Austria in 1997, Alan winning in a Shadow and Vern 16th in a Surtees. Another good friend, past Australian Sprint Car Champ Skip Jackson, who is an avid F1 follower still thinks Perkins and Jones shared a track at one time. True or false?
Money,Money,Money
Then we have Silverstone, who went from a profit in 2009 to a loss in 2010. Silverstone was unusual in that it made a profit. It is only one of two non-government backed races on the calendar, so this is a major feat. Chris Pook told me a long time ago when he ran Long Beach that if Bernie thought you were making money he increase the fee, and lo and behold Silverstone's fee for the renewed 17 year contract is it's highest ever fee at around 11.6 million pounds. Bernie did cut them a break though as the escalator is only 5% and not the usual 10%. This still means that in the next ten years the fee is going to top 20 million pounds. Admission fees are now 195 pounds for the cheapest tickets to 475 pounds. $1000 to see a GP! You'd better not take the family. Does anyone think this is sustainable?
Lastly the poor old BBC, the State owned broadcasting service in the UK, is reportedly going to relinquish the rights to F1 as part of the British Governments austerity package. Bernie and the boys are up in arms as they want the races to remain "free to air." Well who is charging the BBC an exorbitant fee for showing them? Bernie, so you would think the answer is simple, if it is that important then just drop the fee. Now I have not lived in the UK for 40 years, so feel free to correct me, but ITV is also free to air is it not? Just those pesky ads to interrupt the broadcast like the rest of us have to put up with, and that is after we pay the cable fee, so what's free? I fail to see what is in it for the BBC anyway? Who cares if your ratings go up, you're not selling the airtime. So it is all "prestige", just another way for a Government to subsidize Bernie to feel good, but without any actual benefit such as hotel and restaurant income for race fans.
Monday Morning
Nice piece in Racer Magazine the other day about the rear wing and overtaking, and the comment that it is still mainly to do with the track and track designers should go back to pencil and paper. I never left it.
Christian Horner was given a guided tour of the new Silverstone pit complex. Looks like a Tesco's supermarket to me but I guess the architect likes it. It "only" cost 27 million pounds! Some of us would like that budget to build a track. I know it was a while ago but Eastern Creek only cost $5m, and is still a nice building. Not sure what the exchange rate is, but my guess is we are talking about $40m for a 16,500 sq m building, that's around $240 per sq ft, very expensive where I am now, but maybe England is more expensive, or it is the gold fittings the F1 Teams want these days. Anyway, Silverstone had better sell a lot of corporate boxes to pay for that.
Nice to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. nearly winning a race, makes a nice change, and Montoya got up to finish fourth after a dreadful qualifying, not bad on a half mile oval and 43 cars.
There continues to be sceptics about the Austin track, particularly among the local media. A spokesman of course says it is all on course, and locals say that at least they have cleared the trees. I would hope so by now. I know earthmoving is in progress and to the layman it probably does not look like much, but they definitely have a credibility problem. Similar stories are around about India, which has a race in October. Chandook in an article in Autosport said there were 7000 workmen on site, but a recent visitor tells me he saw hardly anybody. You have to wonder what you would do with 7000 workmen? We only had 9000 on a $3.5 billion oil refinery that was being built in the same time frame.
Staten Island
We are two days away from the start of the F1 season and all the news is about Vettel shearing sheep? Not much else going on. Webber is the latest driver to come out against the movable wing, asking why he has to use it in qualifying? The answer is he does not, he just won't be as fast as those that do.
On a personal note, why is it that people who approach you about being involved in a project cannot have the courtesy to acknowledge your response, or give you a reply? No, they just disappear. Do they expect me to work for free or for "equity." I cannot believe that anyone worth hiring is going to charge them less or be willing to travel half way around the world at your own time and expense. If they do then they are talking to the wrong guy. I have not done this for over 25 years to be going around cap in hand. It also amazes me when I am asked to submit a list of qualifications or a bid. If you have found me then I would presume you know my qualifications, they are a matter of public record, and I know the person who will be assessing my qualifications is unlikely to be qualified to do so. And would you ask one of the world class architects, such as Pei, to bid on a project? No, you select him on merit and then argue about the fee. So much for today's pet peeve.
News and Old Friends
You know my thoughts on the failure of the spectator driven tracks as a business model, well New Jersey just filed for bankruptcy, how long has that taken? Good luck with Mid-Ohio boys. Silverstone reported a profit of 2m pounds on a turnover of around 50m. Richard Phillips the MD said “I think we are probably the only privately-funded grand prix circuit that does make a profit in the world but the UK is quite peculiar because there is a huge motorsport following, there's a lot of industry here." Well it is an achievement to make a profit of any sort, but given the level of investment in the facility, which is continuing with the new pit building which is costing around 28m pounds, that is not much of a return. Good job it is run by a club. Hard to see how the numbers stack up though. They run the British F1 GP and Bernie's fee has to be half that turnover.
HRT showed up in Barcelona with this year's car, well almost. Parts are stuck in customs apparently and it will not run today. Isn't the car made in Spain? Day four of testing is again all over the place. McLaren had an engine let go so Button has not done much running, but what he did was slow, only faster than the Virgin which has improved to being 6 seconds off the pace. Mercedes are showing their legs with Schumacher topping the charts, fastest of the four days thus far, and Rosberg carrying on where he left off in third place. Ferrari still up there, but Red Bull stooging around today. One thing seems certain, race averages are going to be way off the qualifying times.
Daytona bike week is on but who really cares any more other than some die hards? How do you kill what was a real world class event at one time?
